Red-wing blackbird in cattails
Red-wing blackbird doing its mating display at the edge of the Lower Pond on Mill Creek, near Talmage. A bit later in the year they'll build round nests hidden deep in the cattails to raise their young.
I grew up in western NY, and we had a ton of BOTH cattails AND red-wing blackbirds in my backyard. The red-wings were a lifelong favorite of my mom's ... :) Thanks for the excellent photo!
Very vibrant colouring on its shoulders. Reminds me of the (British) Queen's guard! Nice photo.
